lionofbedstuy: ...everything. This economist just had a bunch of questions about the world and he tried to answer them.

lionofbedstuy: Like why drug dealers still live with their mothers. He also explains that the crime drop in the 90's is because of abortion.
OG: Wait... you know everybody thinks that drug dealers are big ballers and shit. Why does he say drug dealers live with their moms?
lionofbedstuy: That may be true for the kingpins, distributors and the like. He says you have to consider a gang that deals drugs like a regular corporation though. People look at the one or two niggas that are balling, but don't see the hundreds of niggas that are actually on the block pushing the drugs. When you look at how much they're paid, after the kingpins pay their distributors, whatever other expenses... and themselves... the niggas on the block make less than minimum wage.
OG: That's right, youngin'. That's perfectly right. That's why these fools have to stay out of the streets and in school.
lionofbedstuy: It's more complicated than that, though. He says you have to look at this as a business like any other industry. Whether you're an intern at a newspaper hoping to one day be an editor, or a high school athlete busting your ass to be a pro, they're trying to be on top one day too. Look at me, I'm just a lowly community follow-up worker at a non-profit organization, hopefully one day I'll be a senior executive... or I'll run my own non-profit. Them niggas on the block want to be kingpin one day, the only difference is that their business is illegal, dangerous, and destroying our community.
Slim: Yeah what's the name of that book again? "Freakonomics." I heard you talking about abortion too.
lionofbedstuy: Yeah, you grew up in the 80's. You know how fucked up it was, why did the crime suddenly drop? People like to say it's because the economy got better, or police made changes to their strategy. This economist says it's because of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court case that legalized abortion.
Slim: Word?
lionofbedstuy: Unfortunately, it's a fact that if you're born into poverty you'll probably have bad influences that turn you into a criminal when you're older. You see what the Stuy used to be, you see what it still is.
Slim: Yeah.
lionofbedstuy: Well, once abortion was legalized, young, single mothers in the hood could get abortion. You know Medicaid pays for abortions...
Slim: They sure do.
lionofbedstuy: Yeah well... crime dropped in the 90's because the large part of a generation of future criminals were aborted before they could start committing crime. We're not talking about just robbery and buglary in simply NY, we're talking about violent crime like murder and rape dropping nationwide.
Slim: That makes so much fucking sense, son.
lionofbedstuy: It sucks. You don't want to say population is necessary to keep crime down... but he presents cold facts and evidence. He doesn't say that either, he is just answering those tough questions.
